3A – Your Entrepreneurship Story

I remember being exposed to entrepreneurship back when I was still in elementary school living in the state of Oregon. My father decided to begin raising canary birds for recreation. However, the canaries began laying fertilized eggs and we started holding a large number of canaries. My father decided to sell canaries. For better appeal, he would use a special type of food that turns the feather of the canaries to a light orange color. Although I did not understand it at the time, now I think about it, it demonstrates my father’s recognition of an opportunity to differentiate his birds in the fair. The image below closely resembles one of the birds that my father raised in Oregon.

I enrolled in this class because I believe that I can take something valuable from this course as an economics undergraduate student. I hope I can better understand how individuals take advantage of opportunities in the real-world and start their own businesses. It would also be interesting to see the personal background of different enterprises that remain today.

  1. Tommy,
Your story is very interesting! My sister actually has a small canary and I did not know that you could change their color based on the food they ate. I can see how that would be a cool experience as a kid to see your dad do that and actually turn a hobby into some cash. I hope that you are able to learn all that you plan to from this class and take these things with you into your career like you plan to.

  2. Hi Tommy!
I loved your entrepreneurship story! I remember one of my great friends in elementary school used to buy and sell turtles as a kid. He used to have a youtube channel and would advertise all the turtles that he's collected over the month. His youtube channel got really popular, and even at a time reached 10,000 youtube subscribers. Your entrepreneurship reminded me of that and I got really reminiscent of it. Keep up the good work!
